Hemmingwayââ¬â¢s characteristics: no dialog tags, realistic, lifelike speech, uses some figurative language, easy to understand, simple yet deeper meanings, lots of sarcasm- hard-boiled, masculine style, lots of ands, very blunt, downplays death, emphasis on violence and war, contrasts, deals with common man, descriptive imagery, uses nature, reversed order, repetition and parallelism, staccato Hemmingway Short Stories Clean Well-Lighted Place: Characters: Old man, two waiters Themes: money is the only thing of importance, Old waiter is the Hemmingway hero, he doesnââ¬â¢t want to go to sleep because sleep=death. Short choppy sentences, no dialog tags. Lordââ¬â¢s prayer with Nada. Emphasis on cleanliness and light. Cat in the Rain: very few nametags, understatements, short, choppy sentences.
